Sean Dyche - A man of dignity

Last updated : 30 October 2012 By Tony Scholes

It was back in early July when he lost his job at Watford yet had to wait quietly for days before it was publicly confirmed that I wrote:  "It left poor Dyche, who had done such a good job last season, in a terrible position for four days. He didn't deserve that, he deserved much better.

"Strangely, a year ago, I thought they'd made a poor appointment in Dyche and tipped them  to go down. He exceeded expectation but the man has acted with great dignity this week."

Dyche could be confirmed as Eddie Howe's replacement as early as today, but what sort of person are we getting.

Yesterday, I spoke to Frank Smith, deputy sports editor of the Watford Observer. He told me: "Sean is a very honourable man and tells it as it is. He's not a glamorous manager but what he did at Watford was get the best of the players he had."

I'd been prompted to speak to Frank because of an article published in his newspaper back in July following his sacking by Watford. Such is the esteem in which he is held, they republished it yesterday with Frank giving us some insight into the man who will be our next manager.

He refers to a respectful man who it was a pleasure to work alongside. He speaks of a manager who guided Watford to their highest league position, and points tally, in four seasons and to a top half finish in the Championship, and with one of the smallest budgets in the division.

Frank says that Dyche could consider himself extremely unfortunate to be out of work when he became one of a very small group of managers to be sacked despite exceeding expectations.

His article Sean Dyche was the embodiment of Watford as a club is a good read and tells us about the sort of man who will be the next manager of Burnley Football Club.
