Scunthorpe take the honours on night of strange results

Last updated : 15 September 2010 By Tony Scholes

It was the night when Nottingham Forest came from behind at Preston to win for the first time this season and Leicester did likewise in beating Cardiff at the Crisp Bowl.

For Cardiff it was a first defeat of the season and they were not the only first time losers; Ipswich were beaten for the first time, going down at home to league leaders QPR who were the only side in the top nine at the start of the day to go on and win.

QPR are now the only unbeaten club, sitting three points clear at the top, and down at the other end of the table isn't it good news to see Portsmouth still without a win. The club that really shouldn't be in business are the only club with a zero in the win column and a point behind Preston who themselves haven't recorded a solitary point other than their home win against Portsmouth.

It was certainly a night for goalscorers. Chris Iwelumo scored the first Championship hat trick on Saturday in our win against Preston, but it didn't remain the only hat trick for long. Last night James Vaughan, on loan from Everton, hit three for Palace in their 4-1 win over Pompey and James Coppinger got all three in Doncaster's win against Norwich.

Besides those two, there were five other players who scored two goals, including Chris Dagnall for Scunthorpe. I mention his name because he scored perhaps the most fortunate goal of the night in what surely was the result of the night.

Without a manager after Nigel Adkins opted for a move to the South Coast, Scunthorpe turned up at Bramall Lane with Ian Baraclough in temporary charge and saw off the home side 4-0. Dagnall it was who opened the scoring, but how on earth he got away with the handball leading up to the goal is anyone's guess.

Just as the goal of the day at weekend came in our game, even though Big Chris himself thought his third goal was the best, saw the best one of the night last night came in our game too, unfortunately Middlesbrough's winner.

The stats are below, along with the Championship's leading goalscorers, the disciplinary records of each club and the next fixtures.
