I'm not sure it's happened to Burnley that often but I can recall not getting our first win in the 1979/80 season until November. By the end of 1979 we'd won five and the sixth came at the beginning of February in only the second game league game of 1980. It had hoisted us six points clear of the bottom but we didn't win again and were relegated.
That won't much bother Wednesday fans right now who will have been celebrating over the weekend. Not only did they beat Reading but they put five past them with new loan signing Connor Wickham, wrongly suggested by the North East press to be joining Burnley last week, scoring one of them.
They started the day at the bottom of the league but those three points have moved them out of the bottom three. Yeovil have dropped back to the bottom after losing at Leeds while Barnsley are next to bottom despite claiming a point at Ipswich.
They've now been joined by Birmingham. They've won just one point in their last four games and this after they'd hit four goals in successive home games against Wednesday and Millwall just a few weeks ago.
Birmingham, right now, look a good bet for relegation. I saw their shambolic attempts at defending at Burnley back in September and a couple of weeks ago it looked even worse when they conceded four at Leeds.
This time one goal was enough with Charlton taking the much needed points to keep them a few points clear of the bottom.
At the other end of the table things have tightened up a bit, certainly as far as the top four are concerned. By the time we'd kicked off at Millwall we were ahead of Leicester only on goal difference after they'd won 3-0 at Watford, another result of the day candidate.
Just a few months ago their promotion hopes died at Vicarage Road in the play-offs but this time they were too good for the Italians in a game that saw Anthony Knockaert get their second. It was Knockaert who missed the crucial penalty in stoppage time that, had it gone in, would have seen them at Wembley, made worse by the fact that Watford went straight down the pitch and got their crucial winning goal.
That goal won't be the talking point though; Chris Wood's opener will claim that when Watford goalkeeper Manuel Almunia's clearance smashed into his face and rebounded into the net for the big strikers first goal of the season.
Leicester ended the day a point behind us and QPR are a further point behind after they beat Derby 2-1 at Loftus Road with some rather generous goalkeeping from Lee Grant. Fourth place Blackpool won too but none of the next five at the start of the day picked up a point.
We've mentioned Reading, Forest, Watford and Derby and the other in the five were Huddersfield whose gang of three rebels were again missing, presumably once more for the good of the club.
