Five penalties for David Nugent |
It sorted of backfired on them by the final whistle but when they went 4-1 up at Pride Park they started chanting 'You're getting sacked in the morning' at Steve McClaren who was just about to become the new head coach at Derby on the following day.
McClaren had the last laugh though. He strode into the dressing room at half time, took over from the beleaguered caretaker Darren Wassell, made tactical changes and substitutions and Derby turned things round and earned themselves a point.
Clarets Mad understands that McClaren, who a couple of years had a disastrous spell with Derby's neighbours Forest, returned to the stand rather that finish his cup of coffee on the touchline.
It was good to see us finally get a penalty. It was a shock and maybe Sean Dyche had been asking Nigel Pearson how to go about it. Incredibly Leicester scored from the spot for the sixth time in ten league games this season at Yeovil and that kept them level with us and QPR on 23 points.
David Nugent has now scored five of them with Paul Konchesky getting the other in a recent game against Blackpool. This latest one helped them to a 2-1 win at Yeovil who themselves won a spot kick.
Nugent's five is by far the most penalties scored by any player this season. Four players have scored two. They are Charlie Austin (QPR), Troy Deeney (Watford), Brett Pitman (Bournemouth) and Jordan Rhodes (Blackburn).
A total of 28 penalties have now been scored in the Championship this season. Leicester, with six, have scored the most while Middlesbrough have conceded four, more than any other club.
Leeds haven't scored from the penalty spot but they should have done on Tuesday. They won one when Bournemouth goalkeeper Ryan Allsop brought down Noel Hunt. Allsop was sent off but substitute goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan came on and saved Ross McCormack's penalty.
Bournemouth have hit out strongly at goalkeepers getting sent off in this situation. Goalkeeping coach Neil Moss felt a yellow should have been enough although manager Eddie Howe has confirmed they will not be appealing the red card.
Someone asked on the message board just ahead of our game at Doncaster whether we were the only Championship club not to have been awarded a penalty this season. Leeds, as we now know have missed one but besides them none of Birmingham, Bolton, Brighton, Doncaster, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday have scored a penalty this season.
Birmingham were another to miss one on Tuesday. Jesse Lingard was the culprit here but he did score right at the end of their game, one they won 4-0 against Millwall.
Watford, with 20 goals, are the league's highest scorers right now. We are in second place with 19. QPR have conceded the least number of goals. Only twice have they had a goal scored against them and again we are in second place having conceded just six goals.
We're also in second place in the clean sheet chart too behind QPR. Tuesday's game was our fifth clean sheet in ten league games this season. For comparison our fifth clean sheet last season came at Hull in our 18th league game and eventually we went on to keep a total of twelve throughout the season.
Tuesday's results saw Blackpool back in the top six at the expense of Reading while down at the bottom Yeovil are back in the bottom three with Sheffield Wednesday having climbed out on goal difference. The bottom four clubs all have five points.
Finally, praise was heaped on those Middlesbrough supporters who watched their home draw against Huddersfield on Tuesday. Just 12,793 turned up, the lowest ever attendance for a league game at the Riverside.
Mowbray said: "I think the people who are coming to the games at the moment are what I would call true Boro fans. They are going to be here through thick and thin and I can only thank them for their support."
The ground would have looked relatively full compared to our first ever game there when just 5,059 saw us go out of the FA Cup against Darlington.
The results and stats from Tuesday are below along with the leading goalscorers, each club's red and yellow card count, the highest and lowest attendances and this weekend's fixtures, the last before the next international break.
