Rotherham's Webb is referee

Last updated : 31 October 2003 By Tony Scholes

His previous visit was last season’s home game against Millwall and it can only be hoped that he shows a different approach than he did on that occasion when he was under the illusion that he was the star attraction that people had paid money to see.

At the time I said of him, "And what about Howard Webb, the referee, on his first visit to Turf Moor. It was a wonder there was any flowing football at all so keen was this guy to stop the game. It looked as though he had noticed the television cameras and wanted to be the star of the show. Maybe someday someone will explain the word advantage to him."

But that is how you get noticed and how you can find yourself moving up to the Premiership and the elite list of referees after only three seasons as a Football League list.

He has to date been given just one Premiership match and that was the 0-0 draw between Fulham and Wolves two weeks ago. He isn’t too card happy though and in ten games this season there have been 33 yellow and 3 red cards.

He came in for some stick from Preston’s Weary Whinger after their game at Crewe but that doesn’t reflect on the referee, it is a common occurrence at Preston games.

Tomorrow he will be assisted by Ray Gould (Derbyshire) and Andy Martin (Staffordshire).
