Roche and Grant in the reserves

Lee Roche - first reserve team game
Along with Matt O’Neill they are though the only players with any first team experience in tonight’s line up as rock bottom Burnley go looking for their first point at the fifth attempt.

Joel Pilkington makes a welcome return to action after a frustrating time injured. He was on the bench for some first team games towards the end of last season but an injury forced him out and prevented him making an almost certain debut.

He’s been back in full training for a couple of weeks and gets his first game of the season when he lines up in midfield with Grant. Also back is goalkeeper Michael Hale who has missed the last three youth games with injury.

The Burnley team is: Michael Hale, Lee Roche, Ryan Townsend, Neal Trotman, Danny Pitham, Marc Pugh, Joel Pilkington, Tony Grant, Matt O’Neill, Rhys Carpenter, Damien Hindle. Subs: Ross Preston, Alex Taylor, Tom Ince, Darrel Avery.

Our hosts Tranmere Rovers, a club currently without manager since Ray Mathias was sacked, are currently two places above us. After picking up four points from the first two games they have since suffered two successive league defeats plus a third defeat last week at the hands of Macclesfield Town in the Cheshire Senior Cup.

Tranmere line up: Russell Howarth, Vaughan, Carl Tremarco, Paul Linwood, Kevin Gray, Alan Navarro, Jamie McGuire, Stephen Jennings, Dickinson, Paul Robinson, Paul Brown. Subs: Paul Martin, Phil Palethorpe, Gerard Scott, Joe Fowler, Gary Pinch.
