Just a few days ago Barnsley revealed that they were expecting to sign Foster, they gave the impression that a two year deal had been agreed. Today though, the south Yorkshire club admitted that Foster had just agreed to consider their offer.

Yesterday he chose Burnley and Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie, who has suffered other set backs in trying to strengthen his squad in the last few weeks, revealed his disappointment on missing out on the central defender.

“I found out late last night that Stephen has gone to Burnley and it is disappointing but that's the way things go in football. Hopefully now Antony Kay will sign his new deal next week so strengthening that area of the team is not as necessary as it was before.

“But it is a pity that we could not tempt Stephen to Oakwell.”
