Riley tonight at Reading

He has something of a reputation for hogging the limelight, and he is probably one of the most unpopular referees in the country with football supporters because of this. There's no doubt that he grabbed those headlines in each of his last two Burnley games.

At Derby in January 2007 he handed out six yellow cards, sent off Eric Djemba-Djemba and ordered both managers, Billy Davies and then Steve Cotterill, to the stands. Last season we ended up with nine a side at Hull when Caleb Folan and Jay Jay Okocha were dismissed along with Steven Caldwell and Joey Gudjonsson.

This season, in just 29 domestic games, he's handed out 124 yellow cards and six red cards. And yet, in three Champions League games he's kept his cards in his pocket. He clearly referees games outside the country in a different way to domestic games.

We shouldn't be unduly worried about the cards. The yellow cards have been fairly evenly spread with 59 of them going to home team players and 65 to away team players. Of the six players red carded four of them have been home team players.

The last of those six red cards was back in February when he sent off Frank Lampard in Chelsea's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool, a decision that was rescinded.

One thing is surely for certain, he won't be waving his red card around just as much as he's done in his last two Burnley games. He's over officious at times and maybe that could just be what we need tonight at Reading.

He will be assisted by John Flynn (Wiltshire) and Michael Bull (Essex) whilst Andy D'Urso (Essex), who refereed our home game against Sheffield Wednesday this season, will be the fourth official.
