Richard the First

Certainly a group from London Clarets and a group from Colne Clarets were set to be amongst the crowd at WOG Hardiwijk as they took on their Dutch counterparts.

But Richard and Burnley Football Club were informed on Thursday that he would be stepping up to the Under 21 squad who also play Holland on Tuesday and this will be played at the Kingston Communication Stadium, home of Hull City.

Before you all go rushing off for tickets the bad news is it is already a complete sell out and it has even been a battle for Richard’s family to get them. They will thankfully be there to hopefully see him make his international debut.

The step up could have cost him his first cap, he was set to start in Hardiwijk whereas it could be that he doesn’t even get on in the Hull fixture. If he does he will become the first Burnley player to play for England Under 21s since ………

The answer to that is simple, nobody, he will become our first ever England Under 21 international.

Chappy was watched last Saturday by Under 21 boss David Platt and impressed enough to get the call and all we can do now is wish him all the best and tune into Sky Sports for the live coverage on Tuesday.

Congratulations Richard from Clarets Mad – a well deserved honour.

The full squad is: Darren Ambrose (Newcastle), Dean Ashton (Crewe), Darren Bent (Ipswich), David Bentley (Arsenal), Scott Carson (Leeds), Richard Chaplow (Burnley), Michael Chopra (Nottm Forest – loan from Newcastle), Carlton Cole (Charlton – loan from Chelsea), Andrew Davies (Middlesbrough), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Lee Grant (Derby), Glen Johnson (Chelsea), Justin Hoyte (Arsenal), Nicky Hunt (Bolton), Matt Kilgallon (Leeds),
