It was at Villa that he reached his peak, playing in the side that won the league and the European Cup which led to him being called up into Ron Greenwood's England squad in late 1981.
He made six appearances for his country, four of which were won with two others drawn, but missed out on the 1982 World Cup in Spain, something that remains a regret in his career. His last appearance came exactly a year after his debut against Hungary.
