Reserves on the brink despite late goal

A young reserve team could have been in front on a number of occasions early in the game but missed the chances. As the young legs tired Walsall came more and more into it and it was no surprise when they went in front.

But credit to our youngsters, we kept going despite being reduced to ten men when Damien Hindle had to go off injured after a nasty looking collision with the Walsall keeper. And we were rewarded when Marc Pugh found the net following a long throw from Neil Trotman.

Oldham though have now pulled three points clear of us with a 1-0 win against Preston tonight, a game that saw Preston miss a penalty with the score at 0-0. They have finished their fixtures but the Clarets have two games left.

Oldham’s goal difference is two better than ours and so it really means we need a win and a draw next week from our games against Tranmere (away) and Bury (home) on the Monday and Wednesday. If we were to lose one of them by just one goal we would need to win the other by four to finish above Oldham on goal difference.

Relegation really would be disastrous and we can only hope that somehow we can get the points needed next week.

Our full report from tonight’s game will appear later.
