Reserves finish fifth

With Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday and Barnsley last night both winning the Clarets have found themselves ending the season in fifth place, almost an unjust reward having come so close to the title.

A win for West Brom last night against bottom club Port Vale ensured they avoided relegation to the First Division and Wrexham will now go down with Port Vale. Their places will be taken next season by First Division champions Walsall and runners-up Scunthorpe United.

It will all change though because Premiership clubs, or clubs with a recent Premiership past, play in their own reserve team league and that means either West Brom or Wolves reserves will definitely move out. Besides that the play off winners could come from this league and that could mean a goodbye from any of Wolves or West Brom (whoever doesn't go up automatically), Birmingham, Preston or ourselves. Whether this will grant any sort of reprieve for Wrexham or Port Vale remains to be seen.

The final results in the Premier Division this week were:

Wednesday 17th April

Birmingham City 2 Oldham Athletic 2
Preston North End 2 Burnley 0
Tranmere Rovers 3 Wrexham 1

Thursday 18th April

Birmingham City 0 Barnsley 1
Port Vale 0 West Bromwich Albion 1
