Reserves and youth team preparing for the new season

The youth squad in pre-season training
For the reserves it is a drop down to Division One West of the Pontin’s Holiday League after we were left stranded at the bottom of the Premier Division last season nine points from safety with only four wins all season.

Next season will see us playing many of our away games in the afternoon as we take on lower level clubs such as Macclesfield, Chester and Shrewsbury. There will be games though against Manchester United who have followed the same path as Newcastle by introducing a second reserve team.

The season gets underway with an afternoon kick off at Rochdale whilst we have to wait until September for the fist home game when we take on the reserves of Conference National club Carlisle.

There are changes with the youth team brought about by the fact that the three year scholarships have been replaced with a two year modern apprenticeship. This means the Youth Alliance League will now be an Under-18 competition rather than for Under-19s.

This means players such as Ryan Townsend, Joe Booth, Adam Jones and Alex Taylor will not be eligible to play and will be able to play only in the reserve team games.

As in previous seasons we will play in the Youth Alliance North West Conference and will then move onto the Merit League and will be placed dependent on where we finish in the first league along with clubs from the North East and North Central Conference Leagues.

With such a reduced playing staff there will again be no pre-season reserve games but the youth team have five scheduled as follows which will all be played away from home.
