Referee Jones is back at the Turf

Last updated : 04 October 2013 By Tony Scholes

He might not be a stranger but, somewhat surprisingly, he hasn't refereed a game at the Turf since January 2011, the last game we played under caretaker manager Stuart Gray although he has twice refereed us since on the road.

He's certainly a very experienced referee. He joined the Football League list in the summer of 1997 at a time when Chris Waddle was just becoming manager of Burnley and his first Burnley game came that season in a home game against Brentford.

Eleven years later he was promoted to the select group and soon got his first Premier League game. His first Football League game had been Mansfield v Hull in 1997 and his first Premier League game also featured Hull, their home game against Wigan in the 2008/09 season.

He's a referee often caught up in controversy. He is the now infamous beach ball referee from Sunderland and there has been more than an occasional gaffe from him in Burnley games and probably none more so than our Premier League home game against Hull when a series of 'debatable' decisions went our way.

Tomorrow's game will be his seventh this season and his fourth in the Championship. In the six games to date he's handed out 19 yellow cards and one red card, that to Hull's Yannick Sagbo in their 1-0 home win against Norwich.

Seven of the yellow cards have gone to home team players and twelve to away team players and the home bookings include both Chris Gunter and Nick Blackman when he refereed Reading's home 3-3 draw against Watford on the third Saturday of the season.

His last game was the Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Manchester City last week. Villa won 3-2 in a game that saw theme have Yacouba Sylla yellow carded along with City's Samir Nasri.

Tomorrow will see him referee this fixture for the third time. He refereed the home games against them in both the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons.

Mike Jones is currently in 14th place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 72.01 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Andrew Halliday (North Yorkshire) and Steven Copeland (Merseyside). The fourth official is Football League referee Jeremy Simpson (Lancashire) who is still to referee a Burnley game.
