Ray Deakin passes away

Ray Deakin
We learned in August, on the eve of the new season, that Ray had a brain tumour which had been partially removed, but all the news following was that he might not make it after also suffering a stroke.

He joined the Clarets in the summer of 1985, one of the new recruits for manager Martin Buchan, and he went on to captain Burnley through the most difficult period in the club's history.

Deakin was captain for the Orient game but was also the captain when a year later we played in the Sherpa Van Trophy Final, becoming just the third Burnley captain to lead the Clarets out at Wembley. He was release by Frank Casper at the end of the 1990/91 season and retired from the game.

Then came the shocking news in August and the even worse news today.

My thoughts, and I'm sure those of everyone else involved with Clarets Mad and Burnley Football Club, will be with his wife Penny, his son Adam and the rest of the Deakin family.
