Rare visit for referee

Last updated : 10 December 2004 By Tony Scholes
That’s no real surprise with Leake based just down the M65 in Darwen and although he has refereed pre-season friendlies his one and only Turf Moor league game was the corresponding fixture four seasons ago.

On that occasion, in front of the Sky TV cameras we beat Preston 3-0 with goals from Ian Moore, Kevin Ball and Glen Little. On that occasion, although not having the best of games, he kept things even with three bookings for each side.

This season he is averaging just two and a half yellow cards per game with thirty-nine from sixteen games and just two red cards for Derby’s Jamie Vincent in a 3-1 defeat at Millwall and Mark Innes of Chesterfield who was sent off at Barnsley as his side went down 1-0.

The yellow cards couldn’t be more even with nineteen going the way of home players and the other twenty to away team players. The most cards in any game was six in the afore mentioned League One fixture between Barnsley and Chesterfield.

He’s a referee who hasn’t courted controversy and after the performances of Ilderton and Probert in the last two weeks just has to be an improvement.

The assistants tomorrow are Scott Duncan (Tyne & Wear) and Chris Reeves (East Yorkshire).
