Racecourse beckons for Clarets

Last updated : 19 May 2007 By Tony Scholes

This game will be played on Tuesday 17th July at the Racecourse Ground against a Wrexham side that just avoided the drop into non-league football on the last day of the season. A win against Boston sent the Lincolnshire side down.

Wrexham have had a difficult time over the last few years. They were relegated two seasons ago because of a points deduction brought on by going into administration, a very harsh decision given that they had taken the action in their fight against Alex Hamilton who was trying to sell off the ground.

Although they got over that hurdle they have struggled on the field, and last season's relegation fight saw the departure of manager Denis Smith who was replaced by Brian Carey. Carey has now been given the job on a full time basis.

Burnley have had some enjoyable times at the Racecourse. There was Graham Lancashire's hat trick, the 2-0 win in 1996 that ensured we would avoid relegation, and Andy Payton's 200th goal on our last visit in 2000.

This will be our second pre-season game, after Accrington, the games are:

14th July - Accrington Stanley (away)
17th July - Wrexham (away)
21st July - Middlesbrough (home)
24th July - Bradford City (away)
