What a pity the score wasn't 1-0 to Yeovil; that would have seen current leaders QPR down in fourth place and the Clarets would have been holding top position on goal difference. As it is we are second with Leicester, Blackpool, Watford and Nottingham Forest in the play-off positions.
A win for Yeovil, who haven't won since the opening day at Millwall, would have been a shock but we shouldn't have been surprised at the scoreline. QPR have won six of their eight games to date and five of them have been by a 1-0 scoreline. On this occasion, just as it had been against Birmingham seven days earlier, the scorer was Charlie Austin who netted from the penalty spot.
Atde Nuhiu gave Sheffield Wednesday the lead against them in the first game of the season, but QPR went on to win 2-1. In the next game Huddersfield went in front through James Vaughan but it ended 1-1. They remain the only two players to have scored against them and they've now played 595 minutes of league football since they last conceded a goal.
It goes without saying that they have the best defensive record in the division so far. We have the second best with six conceded, a total matched by Brighton and Huddersfield. We also have the second best record in terms of scoring. Along with Derby and Nottingham Forest and Derby we've scored 14 goals, bettered only by Watford who have found the net 19 times.
Eleven of those goals have come in two games. They beat Bournemouth 6-1 on the second Saturday of the season and this weekend netted five times in a 5-1 win at Oakwell against Barnsley, and with five different goalscorers.
On the subject of scoring goals, Manchester United loaned our Federico Macheda to Doncaster last week and he responded by scoring twice on his debut in a 2-2 home draw against Nottingham Forest.
That pales into insignificance when you look at what happened at Birmingham. Having been beaten at Burnley last Tuesday they also moved in on Old Trafford to make a loan signing, that of 20-year-old Jesse Lingard. He repaid them with all four goals on his debut in a 4-1 rout of Sheffield Wednesday. That's some achievement, one that former Burnley player Ian Lawson equalled in January 1957 when he scored four in a 9-0 FA Cup win against Chesterfield on his debut.
Wednesday are hovering just above the bottom three but are one of two Championship teams without a win. The other one is Bolton. They actually took the lead at Brighton with an own goal but early in the second half conceded three goals in four minutes and nine seconds.
Manager Dougie Freedman has said he won't walk away, which suggests that the axe might be falling soon if their fortunes don't change. They have one point less than Wednesday, Yeovil and Barnsley with Barnsley boss David Flitcroft's future hanging in the balance.
It's cup week this week so no league games until the weekend. The recent results and stats are below along with the leading goalscorers, each club's red and yellow card count, the highest and lowest attendances and the next league fixtures.
