Premiership Walton is at Forest

Last updated : 22 April 2005 By Tony Scholes

It’s just a week short of a year since he last refereed a Burnley came as a late stand in for Phil Dowd at Rotherham when we crashed 3-0 on the day our future in this division was confirmed with Walsall losing at Palace.

I can’t remember too much about his performance that afternoon, I was more concerned with our defending, particularly from our goalkeeper and left-back to be too worried about what the referee was up to. The fact is he booked two players and both were Rotherham players.

It was the first time he had refereed a Burnley game that had seen the two sides both finish with eleven players. He sent off Neil Moore back in 1999 against Luton, whilst Jon Daly of Stockport and Walsall keeper James Walker have both gone off in games against us.

He’s not one of the higher rated Premiership officials and has come in for some stick recently and that seems to have had some effect. In the last month he has concentrated more on carding the home players after a season when he has been labelled a homer.

Despite the recent rush of bookings his record still favours the home sides. So far in 28 games he has dished out 80 yellow cards and a couple of red cards. Of those 80 yellow, 35 of them have now gone to home team players with the other 45 to away team players.

The two players he has sent off, both in November, were Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen in a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough and Marlon Harewood of West Ham as they were beaten 1-0 at Millwall.

Hopefully he will be about as noticeable tomorrow as he was at Rotherham but not this time because we were as bad as we were that day.

He will be assisted tomorrow by Andrew Butler (Lancashire) and Des Morrison (Derbyshire).
