Premiership referee for Preston clash

A year ago it was the very impressive Paul Durkin, tonight the referee will be Bolton based official Mike Halsey.

Halsey was in charge of one of the early games in the Waddle season, the 1-0 defeat at Southend. He was busy that afternoon issuing no less than seven yellow cards. Four of those went to Southend players with Steve Blatherwick, Andy Cooke and Michael Williams joining them.

It was late in our promotion season the next time we saw him and a match that Glen Little will certainly remember. We won 2-1 at Cardiff, where Graham Branch received a yellow card and Glen was sent off for violent conduct. To be fair Halsey had little option.

Early in the following season he booked Gordon Armstrong, Ian Cox and Mitchell Thomas as we went out of the Worthington Cup on away goals at Crystal Palace and we haven’t seen him since.

This season he has refereed 28 games with 20 of those being Premiership games. In those 28 games he has handed out just 66 yellow cards and 4 red cards. Of the yellow cards 29 have gone to home team players and 37 to away team players whilst 3 of the red cards have been given to home team players.

Two of those three were in the same recent match, the Birmingham derby, when he sent off both Joey Gudjonsson and Dion Dublin of Villa.

Halsey hasn’t courted much controversy this season and we should be able to expect a good game from him.
