Premiership ref Dowd at the Turf

It was in fact at the end of February that he took charge of that wonderful FA Cup win against Fulham, a night when he dismissed Fulham’s Sean Davis besides yellow carding Ian Moore and Sylvain Legwinski.

Davis is not the first player he has sent off at Turf Moor. On his first visit at the end of 1998 he sent off Brian Reid for a second bookable offence in a 1-1 draw against Lincoln. Mark Ford was the other Burnley player carded in that game along with three Lincoln players.

In two drawn games in the 2000/01 season only Graham Branch picked up a card, they were the home game against Grimsby (1-1) and the 0-0 draw at Grimsby.

But there was controversy last season in our opening game at Sheffield Wednesday when he allowed Paul Cook to re-take a penalty after his first effort had been saved by Chris Kirkland who had apparently come off his line.

Last season saw Dowd get his first Premiership games, a handful of them whilst this season 11 of the 32 games he has refereed have been in the Premiership. In those 32 games he has handed out 108 yellow and 7 red cards. A couple of those red cards have been since the Fulham game.

The yellow cards have been evenly handed out with 50 going to home players and 58 to away players whilst the red card count is 2-5.

He had a good game at the Turf when we beat Fulham even though Andy Gray thought he was harsh to send off Sean Davis for a tackle that came close to ripping Tony Grant’s leg in two. He got that right and most of the decisions right, hopefully that will be the case tomorrow.
