Premier League Probert

Last updated : 19 October 2007 By Tony Scholes
This will be Probert's fifth Burnley game. They say first impressions are important and I always think back to the first of those previous four games when this referee's name comes up. It was at Plymouth three seasons ago, the day he yellow carded players in a defensive wall for being fifteen yards away from the free kick.

I have previously described him as a referee who understands the laws of the game but not the game itself and last season in some televised games I saw some worrying decisions from him.

It hasn't held him back and in January of this year he was rewarded with this first Premiership game, Sheffield United v Portsmouth at Bramall Lane, and this season has been promoted to the select group of referees.

He's been quiet since the season got underway with only fifteen yellow cards from nine games and he couldn't be more even with eight of them going to home players and seven to away players. To add to that there's been one red card, that coming last week in the League Two game between Macclesfield and Wrexham. He sent off Wrexham's Robert Garrett ten minutes from the end with the Welsh side winning 2-1, but they went on to lose the game.

Worried about him tomorrow? I've been to Oakwell and seen Kevin Lynch in action and I've been to Oakwell and seen Iain Williamson in action. I'm not over worried about Probert after that.

He will be assisted by David Richardson (West Yorkshire) and Mick McDonough (Tyne & Wear) with Football League referee Andy Haines (also Tyne & Wear) on duty as the fourth official.
