Premier League Friend back at Turf Moor

Last updated : 02 October 2009 By Tony Scholes
I have to admit to being astonished, given the games I've seen him referee, that he's got anywhere near our top division. He's very much known as a homer and usually his card count will show this very fact.

On two of the last three occasions he's refereed the Clarets we've ended the game with ten men. In the very last game of the 2007/08 season he ordered off Clarke Carlisle in the defeat at Crystal Palace.

We could have no complaints at that decision, but the sending off of Stephen Jordan at Reading was quite ridiculous and you could guarantee that a home player that day wouldn't have even been spoken to.

For much of last season, until a late flurry of home bookings, almost 80% of his yellow cards were to away team players. This season, so far, it's nothing like that. In five games he's issued 22 yellow cards and just the one red card.

Of those yellow cards, 8 have gone to home team players and 14 to away team players. The one player he's sent off this season is Crystal Palace's Paddy McCarthy in their 1-1 draw at Peterborough.

Tomorrow will be just his second Premier League game in the middle; he refereed the Wolves v Fulham two weeks ago. It will not, however, be his first Burnley game of the season. Back in August he was fourth official for our game at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

Tomorrow his two assistant referees will be Nigel Bannister (East Yorkshire) and David Coote (Nottinghamshire). Bannister is the assistant who somehow managed to see a ball cross the line at Watford last season despite it not even going close.

The fourth official is a well known face to the Clarets, none other than Bolton referee Lee Mason who refereed our recent game at Liverpool.
