Poortvliet resigns at Southampton

Southampton boss Jan Poortvliet has this evening resigned his position at the struggling club with immediate effect and will be replaced by his coach Mark Wotte.

Saints chairman Michael Wilde said: "It's a great pity but home results have led to Jan's decision to stand down. He has made a great contribution to the club and the development of individual players. He is a man of integrity. However, professional sport is about results and we all sink or swim by reference to the scoreboard. He leaves with my heartfelt thanks and best wishes.

Wotte will be in charge for their game against Norwich on Tuesday.
