Pike in charge of Reading game

Last updated : 24 November 2003 By Tony Scholes

It is almost three years to the day since Pike refereed a game at Turf Moor and it is over eighteen months since he was in charge of a Burnley game.

Many point to the 2-1 home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday as a turning point that season whilst the real promotion dream died at Grimsby and that horrendous 3-1 defeat. Pike was referee for both games.

In the last couple of games the referees have seemed OK until the major decisions have been analysed. I still don’t blame Rennie for the penalty but certainly point the finger at the cheating Morris.

But again Pike is a referee that is not card crazy and likes to keep the game flowing. Last season he averaged less than two yellow cards per game and this season he is on exactly two per game with 28 in 14 games although he did hand out four red cards in a fortnight in consecutive matches in September.

Home players have come off marginally worse with the yellow cards and have collected 15 against 13 although all four players sent off have been playing away. They include Sheffield United’s Chris Morgan who was dismissed for punching Gareth Taylor on his Forest debut after feeling the force of Taylor’s elbow.

He will be assisted at Turf Moor by Bob Pollock from Merseyside and Will Ramsay from the West Midlands.
