Pike again for Ipswich

Last updated : 27 September 2005 By Tony Scholes
That Ipswich game was not his last Turf Moor appearance, he was back last April for the 3-1 home win against Watford and just as he had done in previous appearances he had a nondescript sort of performance apart from the fact that he does appear to allow players to handle the ball without penalty.

His strange idea of not bothering with such things actually brought us a goal in that Watford game as Ade Akinbiyi almost caught the ball and carried it down the touchline before crossing for the unmarked Jean-Louis Valois to complete the scoring.

Pike is certainly not a referee who goes over the top with yellow cards and last season he averaged less than two per game. Things are not much different this time around with sixteen yellow cards from eight games although he has added two red cards to that.

Bury’s Allan Smart saw red in their 3-0 home Carling Cup defeat against Leicester and Darren Huckerby of Norwich was also sent off in their 3-1 defeat at Stoke. There is certainly no bias towards the home teams as far as the yellow cards are concerned, ten of those sixteen have gone to home team players with just six to away team players.

The assistant referees are Gary Mellor (Yorkshire) and Keith Wilkinson (Tyne & Wear) and fourth official is David Unsworth (Lancashire).
