Pike again

Last updated : 01 February 2008 By Tony Scholes
It is just over seven weeks since his last Burnley game, the 2-0 home defeat against then bottom of the league QPR, and nothing said about him ahead of that game changed during the ninety minutes.

As is always the case, he just let the game continue without intervening. He ignores fouls, he certainly ignores handballs and basically he just avoids making decisions. In my match report of the QPR game I wrote: "Referee Pike hadn't used his whistle much all night and wasn't going to start now, he'd just about given up with making decision."

It was a performance that hardly won him high marks in our 'Rate the Ref' feature. His rating of 41.3 sees him third bottom in the table with only the most incompetent of officials Trevor Kettle and Lee Mason below him.

This season has seen him once again quiet in terms of cards. In 15 games he's now given out 28 yellow cards with 13 of them to home team players and 15 to away team players. Recently he has managed to get his red card out of his pocket. He sent off Ipswich's Castro Sito in their 1-1 draw at the half a ground at Blackpool.

There aren't likely to be many bookings tomorrow, in fact if Pike referees like Pike there aren't likely to be many free kicks to warrant any bookings.

He will be assisted by Geoff Law (Leicestershire) and Neil Radford (Worcestershire) and the fourth official will be Nick Hobbis (West Midlands).
