Peter Pike MP says ‘I Support Burnley'

Last updated : 11 October 2002 By Andy Robinson

'I Support Burnley' was launched just over 2 months ago on 5th August 2002. If you haven’t heard about it before or you have and would like a reminder of what we are saying click HERE but in simple terms we are asking supporters of Burnley Football Club to sign up to the following 5 pledges:

1. I am a supporter of Burnley Football Club.
2. I will not boo or be abusive to either an individual player or the team whilst I am at Turf Moor or an away ground.
3. I will not behave in a violent or disruptive manner at any time.
4. I will not use racist words or behaviour at any time.
5. I will support and encourage the team at all times.

The response we received in the first couple of days was way beyond our expectations as well over 200 people e-mailed us to sign up to the campaign. Since then progress has continued to be steady and Mr Pike will be proudly installed as number 363 on the list of people who have joined us. In an e-mail he told us that: ‘I write to let you know that I do fully support the idea.’ and we are more than happy to have him on board.

Burnley Football Club also supports the campaign and we have had discussions with them recently about releasing some campaign merchandise with the first step being the release of a badge featuring the above logo with all profits going to the Club.

Part of the reasoning behind the start of the campaign was that the Clarets who already behave in accordance with the above pledges were very much the silent majority at Turf Moor. All too often the boo boys and those out to cause trouble got the headlines whilst the rest of us were to some extent tarred with the same brush.

Signing up couldn’t be easier. Just click HERE to send us an e-mail and your name will be added. Maybe Messrs Ternent, Kilby, Ingleby and Watson could be persuaded to add their names to the list or even Bertie and Bumble for that matter.

One thing that has surprised us is that we have had very little support from the various Clarets supporters groups when, quite frankly, we thought that they would be the first to get behind the idea. If you are a member of a supporters group or a committee member even why not get in touch. Maybe we could have a block signing up of members!

Of course you don’t have to sign up to follow the pledges but the more people that do and the more publicity it receives the louder the message becomes. So why not take a look at the launch article and check out the people to have signed up already. Do you want to make a difference? Well maybe you can.
