Penn for the Turf

Last updated : 20 September 2005 By Tony Scholes

Given his two previous Burnley games, both at Reading, there appears to be nothing to fear, he has refereed those games without any problems whatsoever and is not a referee likely to be dishing out too many unnecessary yellow cards.

He’s not had a busy season so far and has refereed just two games, both of them in League Two, and has handed out six yellow cards in total. That is just about average for him over his three previous seasons as a Football League referee.

He was involved with Nigel Miller on Sunday when he acted as fourth official at the Derby v Southampton game that saw Miller go card crazy, more often than not without any good reason. It was Penn who alerted Miller to the behaviour of Harry Redknapp on the touchline that saw the Southampton manager sent off.

Tonight he will be assisted by demoted Football League referee Eddie Evans (Manchester) and Gary Wallace (Tyne and Wear) and fourth official duties will be carried out by Joe Taylor (Lancashire).
