Penn for the Clarets at Cardiff

Last updated : 05 October 2007 By Tony Scholes
Last season we arrived at Ninian Park expecting Chris Foy to lead the teams out, but he was replaced a the last minute and we were forced to suffer, and suffer was very much the right word, Peter Walton who had an absolute nightmare of an afternoon.

It was almost Kettle like, but hopefully there will be no late changes this time and if not we can expect a reasonable performance from a reasonable referee. This will be the fifth Burnley game Penn has refereed and there have been no problems at all in his first four.

He's not a referee who is over eager at reaching for his cards, and more importantly he is a referee who has realised that the whole idea is to make it possible for the players to get on with playing football.

Since joining the Football League list at the start of the 2002/03 season he's averaged not much over two and a half yellow cards per game and has sent off only twenty players during that time.

He's continuing along those lines this season. In nine games so far he's given out just fourteen yellow cards whilst the only player he has sent off was Millwall's Jamie O'Hara in their 3-2 defeat at Cardiff.

There can never be any certainty with a referee but a week ago I was worried at how Trevor Kettle might handle our home game against Crystal Palace. I don't have those worries with Andy Penn.

He will be assisted by Steve Castle (West Midlands) and Andrew Laver (Hampshire) and the fourth official will be Mike Mullarky (Devon).
