Penn at the Turf for cup tie

Last updated : 26 August 2008 By Tony Scholes
Penn for me is one of the better referees in the league. He refereed us at Cardiff last season and ahead of that game I wrote: "He is a referee who has realised that the whole idea is to make it possible for the players to get on with playing football." He received a 'Rate the Ref' rating on our message board of 83.75 for that game despite the defeat and he's currently fifth in the table.

He's not over eager where the cards are concerned. Last season there were just 71 yellow and 6 red cards in 33 games and this season has got off to a quiet start. He yellow carded three Rochdale players in their 2-0 defeat at Bradford on Saturday but this followed two games without a card at all.

There's never a guarantee as to what might happen with a referee, but I don't expect him to go card crazy in Iain Williamson style, and if the players get on with playing the game then I suspect we won't see too much of him.

His assistants tonight are Dave Benton (South Yorkshire) and Ken Haycock (West Yorkshire) whilst fourth official duties are in the hands of Mick Denton (Lancashire).
