Penalty ref will be at the Turf

Last updated : 04 March 2005 By Tony Scholes

It’s not often a referee takes charge of two successive games in a league but that’s the case with Williamson having refereed the Derby v Wolves game just two days ago.

It was in this match that he awarded Derby a penalty that took three attempts before he allowed it. The first was scored but he decided there had been encroachment, the second was saved but Wolves keeper Michael Oakes was a few inches off his line but finally at the third attempt he allowed Inigo Idiakez’ effort to count.

Both managers complained about Williamson’s performance so maybe he is set for a better game tonight.

He’s refereed Burnley twice previously. Last season he had a good game at West Ham in what was his first ever game at this level and this season he sent off Leicester’s Jordan Stewart for kicking out at Ian Moore in our 0-0 draw at Leicester. This though will be his first Turf Moor appearance.

Stewart is one of five players he has sent off this season. The first was Walsall’s Ian Roper in their 0-0 draw at Torquay. Then it was ten a side down at the Den as Sheffield United beat Millwall 2-1 after Kevin Muscat and Paddy Kenny were both sent off right on half time leaving the Blades again with no keeper for half a game.

More recently he dismissed Leyton Orient’s Gary Alexander as they went down 1-0 to Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

He certainly has his moments with the yellow card and there’s been a seven and an eight this season and he is averaging more than three and a half per game with 94 from 26 games.

After a flurry of bookings to home players in the first few weeks of the season he has now settled down into a ratio of one home booking per two away bookings although those early home bookings mean currently 37 of his bookings are for home players and 57 for away players.

He’s a referee we’ve certainly had no problems with, hopefully that’s how it will continue.

He will be assisted tonight by David Benton (South Yorkshire) and Phil Bramley (West Yorkshire).
