Penalty King Kaye is referee

Last updated : 16 September 2003 By Tony Scholes

Wakefield based Kaye has to be fair not caused us too much anxiety in the matches since and is not a referee who wants to be rushing for his cards all the time. In fact last season in 33 matches he handed out just 78 yellow cards and only 4 red cards.

This season he has taken charge of only three games, with eight yellow cards and one red card, but has upset one North West based manager The Weary Whinger Craig Brown. It was Kaye who sent off Preston keeper Jonathan Gould at West Brom after he gave the penalty which brought about the only goal of the game.

Ironically it was the susbsequent suspension that meant David Lucas played at Bradford on Saturday, giving both goals away.

He has also been referee in games at Oldham and Tranmere this season with no problems whatsoever.

Tonight he will be assisted by Gary Foulkes (Merseyside) and Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire).
