Penalty king is man in the middle

It is probably unfair on him, that nightmare at Crewe when he kept pointing to the penalty spot was almost four years ago but when I see him scheduled for a Burnley game it is always the match that comes into my mind.

We had him twice last season – for the home game against Forest followed by the visit to Sunderland – and he got little wrong in either. He did book Chappy up at the Stadium of Light to get him his first suspension, and it was a bit harsh.

He certainly hasn’t been causing any problems this season and hasn’t been rushing round waving his cards to much with just twenty-six yellows in eleven games and no sign of a red card.

Eleven of those cards have gone to home team players whilst fifteen have gone to away team players and four is the most he has given in any one game.

So maybe it is time to forget Crewe and those penalties – after all he won’t have another nightmare like that, surely. Mind you, I reckon next time he referees us I will still be looking back to that game in 2001.

He will be assisted tonight by Andrew Smith (West Yorkshire) and Russell Tiffin (County Durham).
