Pearce is guest

Pearce was with the Clarets for five years, signing in the aftermath of the Orient game in 1987 from Wrexham for a tribunal set £4,000 fee. For four years he was a regular in the side, played at Wembley in the Sherpa Van Trophy Final in 1988, and the only time he lost his place was after a training ground altercation with George Oghani ruled him out with a severe facial injury.

In his last season he was in and out of the team as a succession of loan goalkeepers arrived to finally get us out of the basement division and his final game was the 1-1 home draw against Scarborough on Easter Monday 1992. At the end of that season, after a total of 248 games for Burnley, he was released.

He went on to play for Bradford City but his stay there was cut short due to a back injury. Bradford City was an appropriate destination when he left, I don't think anyone there will ever forget his brilliant performance for us at Valley Parade in the Leyland Daf Trophy game, without doubt his best performance during his time with the Clarets.

The goalkeeper who used to do Max Wall impressions to entertain his team mates at Rochdale will perhaps best be remembered for his dancing at Burnley, and of course that fantastic day when the Fourth Division title had been clinched and, dressed in suit and tie, he jumped onto the old Longside dug out to salute the Burnley fans.

The chant might well be, “Pearce, Pearce give us a dance,” when he steps out onto the Turf again tomorrow, but there's no doubt he will receive a warm welcome from the fans.
