Payts back at the Turf

Andy Payton left the Clarets at the end of the 2002/03 season at the end of his contract, although his Burnley career had effectively been ended over two years earlier when a decision was taken to no longer play him in the first team.

He’s been out of football for a year although at one point it did look as though he would sign for Stalybridge Celtic. But he is back and as well as his new role at Turf Moor he will also be playing again next season.

He is joining the Community team at the Turf alongside other ex-Clarets in Andy Farrell, Gerry Harrison, Ashley Hoskin and Vince Overson. That will be a further boost for our community scheme, regarded as one of the best in the country with the crowd hero of the recent past being part of the team.

Andy will also be dusting off the boots at weekends. During the week he will be working alongside James Webster, at weekends Webster will be his chairman when Payts lines up for Colne in the North West Counties League Division One.

There he will come up against three ex-Clarets who are managing sides in this league – Steve Davis (Nantwich), Nigel Gleghorn (Newcastle Town) and Hoskin (Rossendale United).

I suspect Colne could be a good bet to finish as highest scorers in the league.
