Paul Cook and Sligo

At the time that was exactly the situation and the club's PRO Dermot Brannigan issued a short but somewhat terse statement saying his departure was by mutual consent.

All done and dusted you might think, but not quite. It seems the reason for the parting of the ways was down to the financial constraints under which Cook was being asked to work. The club's budget for the year was rejected by the Football Association of Ireland because it was thought it could leave them in some financial difficulties during the season.

A proposed second budget was accepted by the FAI but that left Cook with too small a squad. There would be just fourteen senior players and no funds to bring any more in. Sligo are facing not just the league but the Europa Cup and Setanta Cup as well and Cook decided that it was impossible to work under those conditions.

Now though things have changed for the club, which is run as a co-operative, and fans have launched a scheme to raise money to increase that budget. The target is to raise €60,000 by a week on Saturday (14th February) which would be available to the player budget.

The FAI have agreed that the money raised can be used in such a way and the supporters are hoping that will persuade Cook to return. We should know in the next two weeks.
