Martin Paterson - started for Northern Ireland
Paterson got the nod from Nigel Worthington as expected ahead of former Burnley player Kyle Lafferty who had to settle for a place on the left hand side. Pato wasn't able to get his first international goal but he helped the Irish into second place in their group in their 4-0 win over San Marino.

Earlier Bes Berisha had been named as a substitute for Albania's game against Malta in Ta'Qali. He came on with a quarter of an hour remaining for Erion Bogdani. The game ended 0-0 but a win for the Albanians would have taken them top of Group 1 but they remain second just one point behind Denmark.

One other Burnley player was hoping to make his full international debut tonight. Rhys Williams was named in the Welsh squad for their friendly against Poland which was played in Portugal.

Williams wasn't called upon as the Welsh made five substitutions in a game they lost 1-0 with a goal from Guerreiro Roger ten minutes from the end. The game really caught the imagination of the Portuguese public and was played in front of a crowd of 487.
