Paterson signs for Burnley

News broke on Saturday evening that Scunthorpe had accepted our third offer for the Northern Ireland international striker and we've now got our man for that agreed fee of £1 million plus add ons of £300,000 based on appearances.

Paterson has signed a four year deal with the Clarets and is the first of a number of players expected to sign for us ahead of the new season.

He started his career with Stoke City, and was a prolific goal scorer in their junior teams. That led to a first team bow in April 2005 in a 2-0 home win against Plymouth. He came on as a late substitute for Chris Greenacre in a game that saw Kenwyne Jones and Darel Russell score the Stoke goals.

It was September 2006 when he scored his first goal for Stoke, in a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, and that was his only goal for the Potteries side. He had a loan spell with Grimsby that season, netting six goals for them and that led to the interest from their closest neighbours Scunthorpe.

With Billy Sharp sold to Sheffield United last summer Nigel Adkins took Paterson to Glanford Park on a Bosman. Being under 24 they had to pay a fee and he cost them an initial £270,000 followed by a further payment and they will also have to pay Stoke a further amount because of a sell on clause. In what was his only season at Scunthorpe he scored fourteen league goals.

His name has been linked with the Clarets since before the end of last season. We had two offers turned down, and the player eventually handed in a transfer request. Today he got his wish and has become a Burnley player for the next four years.
