Paterson had asked for a move after they turned down two offers from the Clarets but there was nothing but praise for them after he had completed his move on Monday. "I have nothing but thanks to Scunthorpe and the manager, coaching staff and fans for giving me an enjoyable year in the Championship," Paterson said.

"They took to me and I feel I have to apologise for the way I left, but that's modern football and if you have a chance to go and better yourself, you have to take it. It's a new start for me now and I can't live on what I did at Scunthorpe.

"I have to kick on because I feel I have to prove myself again at Burnley and that starts next week in pre-season training. I would come in tomorrow if I could because I can't wait to get started. I will always give 100% and if the goals come, then that's all good and well."

Paterson is not too concerned with becoming Burnley's record signing. "The fee is an honour and it's great, but it is not a millstone around my neck," he added. "It's all about keeping a level head and getting my head down to score goals for Burnley Football Club.

"I prefer to think it is a case of the club and the manager placing faith in a young lad and it has given me such a confidence boost. I want to achieve things in the game and I feel I can do that here. Burnley was always at the forefront of my mind when I decided I felt I had to leave Scunthorpe.

"I am a winner, so getting relegated was difficult. It hurt, but knowing I could join a Championship club with a history like Burnley's was just too good to turn down. One of the reasons I came here is the manager's enthusiasm and determination to sign me. As soon as I got here, I wanted to sign and get on with things. This club wants to push on and with no disrespect to Scunthorpe, I have joined a bigger club with the aim of bettering myself."

Owen Coyle, having completed his first signing, was delighted to get his long term target. "I know what type of player I wanted and I wasn't going to bring in players for the sake of it. We are brining them in for a reason, because we think they are big pieces of the jigsaw.

"We want younger types in to boost the team and Martin fits that bill. He will give us an extra dimension to the very good players we have already got at the club and it is a good piece of business.

"A host of Championship clubs wanted Martin and bigger clubs than us tried to get him. We knew though that he wanted to come and join Burnley and I think he's got everything we look for in a player. He's lightening quick, with pace to burn, has a great work rate and works his socks off.

"He's still 21, but he's already a Northern Ireland international and, for me, he will only get better. There is no doubt what we are getting, a player who is hungry and scored 14 goals in the Championship in a team which was relegated.

"As a striker I feel I can help Martin and I would like to think he can recreate that, and then some."
