Paterson - Adkins speaks out

Adkin is now in a rush to find a replacement for Paterson and has already missed out on his first choice Grant Holt who has just moved from Nottingham Forest to Shrewsbury. Adkins said: "I am bitterly, bitterly disappointed, first and foremost with the way Martin has conducted himself.

"He is a young boy with a lot of ability, but with still a heck of a lot to learn. We wanted to have him at this club to give ourselves the best opportunity of success next season. But the way it has been driven has left this club with no alternative but to accept this offer."

Scunthorpe's acting chairman Rex Garton is also far from happy but has revealed the deal could climb higher than the £1.3 million figure widely publicised. "There are other add-ons as well which could take it above that figure, Garton said, "And we have also agreed a 20% sell on clause if Martin is sold by them."

He added: "Burnley continued to show an interest and we have managed to get their bid up to this. If Martin was going to leave this summer, then the deal had to be right for Scunthorpe United. And I think this deal is right."
