Part time Mellon

Mellon was with the Clarets for just over two years. He joined us from Tranmere for £350,000 before returning to Prenton Park on a free transfer in March 2001. He has been there since but was released at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old midfielder had many offers from other clubs within the Football League but because he wishes to pursue other business interests has decided to call time on his full time football career and go part time in non-league football.

Mellon won’t be playing in either level of the Conference next season, nor will he be in either of the Unibond League divisions, but will be featuring six levels lower than he played last season in the North West Counties League with Fleetwood Town.

Playing for Fleetwood is convenient for the player who lives on the Fylde Coast and allows him the time for his new venture.

A delighted Fleetwood Chairman Andy Pilley could hardly contain his excitement following the capture of Mellon and said, “Following our signing last week of former Blackpool defender Phil Thompson from neighbours Squires Gate, Micky’s capture once again shows our clear intent next season to win the North West Counties League to earn promotion into the Unibond League.”

For Clarets he will always be remembered for scoring the vital first goal at Scunthorpe on the day we clinched promotion.
