Parkinson gets Charlton job

Parkinson had great success with Colchester, bringing them into the Championship before jumping ship in an acrimonious move to Hull which in the end didn't work out and he was dismissed within just a few months.

He's more recently been working as Alan Pardew's assistant at Charlton and stepped into the caretaker role when Pardew departed recently. That stewardship hasn't been over successful. Since he assumed control they have played eight games and he's still looking for his first win. Three points from those games have seen them drop into bottom place.

Chairman Richard Murray said on confirming the appointment: "After discussing the situation yesterday, the overwhelming feeling was that Phil was the best man to lead us and rescue us from our current plight.

"With 20 matches remaining this season, we were aware that time was an issue, particularly with the January transfer window opening on Thursday. Phil knows the players, knows the strengths and weaknesses of the side, and has huge Football League experience. Perhaps most importantly, he is a strong character, and knows how to battle against adversity."

Murray though hinted that it was a financial decision with any money available going to team strengthening and said there would be up to four new players coming in during January. He added: "There has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes and performances have improved, although that hasn't been shown by results yet.

"We've looked at the alternatives, but the calls and discussions we've had, given the current situation, have led us to conclude that there is no one better than Phil to turn things around, and we believe any money the club currently has to invest must be spent on the pitch."
