Parkinson finally moves

The goings on over this have done football no favours with Colchester initially refusing to accept Parkinson's resignation when he decided to move on. They then took out an injunction to prevent him talking to anyone else, and that led to a war of words between the two chairmen.

Eventually common sense has prevailed and today Hull agreed to pay Colchester a compensation package of £400,000 and by this afternoon they had installed Phil Parkinson as their new manager.

Parkinson had been at Layer Road since February 2003 and took Colchester to promotion last season and into second flight of English football for the first ever time. This led to a number of clubs interested in him but they were constantly knocked back by the Colchester board. This brought things to a head and Parkinson eventually forced their hand by tendering his resignation.

He's got his way, and the former Bury and Reading player has got the Hull job – leaving Colchester to look for a replacement just over five weeks from the start of the season. Until then Geraint Williams will act as caretaker manager.
