Parkes takes charge

Parkes got off to the quietest of starts this season with a clean sheet on the opening day in the Northampton v Crewe game. Since then though he has used his red card on 3 occasions along with 26 yellow cards in a further 8 games.

Those to see red have been Luton's Christopher Coyne in a 2-1 defeat at Luton, Neil Young of Bournemouth as they lost 2-0 at Swansea and Oxford's Andy Scott in the last minute of their Worthington Cup win at Bristol City.

We need to beware, besides all three red cards going to away players he has also issued 18 out of his 26 yellow cards to away players.

Last season he gave out just 3 red cards and 102 yellow cards in 39 games. One of those games was our 1-0 home win against Watford. In a break with his own tradition the only two yellow cards were given to home team players, Paul Cook and Tony Grant.

However his first Burnley game was controversial when a string of dreadful decisions handed Fulham the points on a plate at Craven Cottage after Burnley had led 1-0.

The memories of Coleman rugby tackling Andy Cooke for an obvious penalty that wasn't given and Fulham equalising within a minute from a free kick that wasn't for which Cooke was booked. Then a harsh red card for Lee Briscoe followed and we ended the game with a 3-1 defeat. Apart from Cookey he also booked Graham Branch on what was a cruel night for the Clarets.

After that game Stan Ternent said, "One decision changed the game. We should have had what to my mind was a blatant penalty but you don't get them at Craven Cottage.

"The referee had a night to forget really. Frenchman Fernandes elbowed Weller in the face off the ball and then a defender makes a mistimed tackle and the referee sends him off.

"Something's got to be done but it has to come from higher up. Somebody like the manager of Burnley isn't going to change things I wouldn't have thought."

Hopefully Mr. Parkes will have a much better game tomorrow.
