Owen starts in Turf Moor international

Owen has played just three times since he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in England's World Cup group game against Sweden in the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne last summer. His first game back for his club was just over three weeks ago. There was no surprise when McClaren called him up for this game.

Scott Carson, a late call up for the injured Ben Foster, gets the nod in goal whilst Phil Neville will provide the most experience in the side. He has 56 full international caps - he made his debut eleven years ago and was in the side that drew in Israel in March.

It's a strong looking England starting eleven which reads: Scott Carson (Liverpool), Phil Neville (Everton), Ledley King (Tottenham), Michael Dawson (Tottenham), Nicky Shorey (Reading), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham), David Bentley (Blackburn), Michael Owen (Newcastle), Alan Smith (Manchester United).
