Our last win in the top division

Uwe - scored the winner
I was one of the 24,897 there that day and not for one moment did I even think that they would remain as the last points we ever picked up at the top level of English football all these years later.

It was Easter Saturday and the last away game of the season, just two home games remained and there will be more on one of them later in the week. Despite the win our relegation still looked virtually certain but there was the slightest glimmer of hope remaining.

The only goal of the game was scored by Peter Noble, a former Newcastle player and Sunderland fan who showed the obvious delight. Uwe (as Noble was called by the fans) had missed much of the season through injury as had Doug Collin, Frank Casper and Paul Fletcher. Casper had actually been forced to retire in January.

I was always confident that we would return and initially dared to think it would be the following year. It is just taking a little longer than I first thought.

The Burnley team that was the last to win a First Division game was:

Gerry Peyton, Derek Scott, Keith Newton, Peter Noble, Jim Thomson, Billy Rodaway, Colin Morris, Brian Flynn, Ray Hankin, Billy Ingham, Mike Summerbee.
