Olivier is referee

Last updated : 21 November 2003 By Tony Scholes

This will only be his third Burnley game and the last of those two saw us end the game with ten men as Mark McGregor was given his marching orders in the 2-1 league defeat at Watford last season as he gave away a penalty.

Stan was far from happy with Olivier’s performance that day and said after the game, "Their penalty was offside, their guy was standing two yards in front of Mark McGregor who had his hands up claiming. And this is all because the linesman made a wrong decision in my opinion. It was a big turning point in the game.

"It will probably be after my time but the incompetence and lack of professionalism of referees needs to improve because they are a constant headache."

One thing that can be said for Olivier is that he is not a card happy referee. He averaged just over three yellow cards per game last season and sent off only five players throughout the season.

This time round in just five games he has handed out only ten yellow cards with six going to home team players and four to away team players. It was definitely his assistant who made the mistake at Vicarage Road and certainly Olivier’s name doesn’t often come up when bad decisions are being discussed in the media.

His assistants at the Turf will be Colin Harwood (Greater Manchester) and Tony McGee (Merseyside).
