Oliver is referee

Last updated : 14 February 2006 By Tony Scholes

He was in charge towards the end of last season when we beat QPR 2-0 in his only previous Burnley game to date and that game is one of just three games he has refereed at this level, with one other last season and more recently the Hull v Ipswich game at the end of December. The 43 year old official is in just his second season on the league list.

I described his performance in the QPR game last season as nit picky, a referee who fussed over minor things far too often that didn’t help the flow of the game. What was a reasonably easy game to control was halted too often although there were only two yellow cards, one for each side.

It is fair to say that he isn’t over eager when it comes to handing out cards and although there has been at least one yellow card in each of his 25 matches so far this season, he has only given out a total of 61 yellow and 2 red cards.

Darlington’s Matt Clarke was the first to see red, in their 2-1 home win over Rochdale back in August, and in the following month he sent off Lewis McMahon of Notts County as they went down 4-0 at Grimsby.

Of those 61 yellow cards, 24 of them have gone to home team players whilst the other 37 have gone to away team players. He’s not been in the news recently, no managers have been ranting and raving at him, so hopefully he’ll be OK, and preferably will let just a little bit more go than he did last season.

The assistants referees tonight are Brian Parry (County Durham) and Keith Wilkinson (Northumberland) and the fourth official is Paul Tierney (Lancashire).
