Oliver gets cup tie

Last updated : 14 August 2007 By Tony Scholes
This will be Oliver's fourth Burnley game but the other three have all been at the Turf with the Ashington born official having been in charge in one home game in each of the last three seasons.

He's not a referee who goes over the top with yellow cards but he is a referee that tends to prohibit a free flowing game with his nit picking attitude. In each of the previous three games he's shown to be a referee who frustrates both fans and players alike by moving free kicks and throw ins a couple of feet time and time again.

On three occasions last season he handed out five yellow cards in a game, but they are the only times he's ever shown so many and again last season his card count was below average.

There's one problem for us, he does tend to favour the home teams somewhat, and very much so with the cards. In 37 games last year he gave out 82 yellow cards but only 23 of those went to home team players with the other 59 to away team players. To add to that all three players to see his red card were playing away from home.

This will be his first game of the season after having had a free day on Saturday. He will be assisted by David Coote (Nottinghamshire) and Wayne Porter (Lincolnshire) and the fourth official will be Wayne Grunnill (East Yorkshire).
